Adoptive Parent Requirements

Adoptive parents can be:

  • Single, married or living common-law 
  • Childless families, families with children or families who have finished raising children
  • Same sex couples or people from the LGBTQ community
  • Financial able to manage the addition of child(ren)
  • Willing and have the ability to cope with the child's needs now and in the future
  • Willing and have the ability to accept birth family involvement if it's in the child's best interests

Who makes a great adoptive parent?

  • You believe in adoption
  • Your are able to permanently commit to a child
  • You have the ability to accept without judging and to love unconditionally
  • You are resourceful
  • You have a willingness to learn
  • You can adapt and will try new strategies
  • You are patient
  • You have the capacity to share joy and laughter
  • You are able to lead by example
  • You can provide appropriate and consistent structure and support
  • You can help a child understand and cope with their situation
  • You have a good sense of humour
  • You have a strong support system and have a willingness to ask for help
  • You have the time to commit to the child

Basic requirements:

  • Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident
  • Minimum 18 years of age
  • Good general health: mental and physical
  • Financially self-sufficient
  • Stable relationship
  • For couples applying, that both partners be fully committed to pursuing adoption
  • No substance abuse, no condoning of illegal substances
  • No criminal charges pending or significant criminal background
  • No verified incidents of child abuse
  • Safe home environment appropriate for a child
  • Ability to carry out essential duties of parenting
