Ontario Makes Necessary Changes to the Age of Protection

Jan 25, 2018

On June 1, 2017, Bill 89 introduced amendments to the Child and Family Services Act (CFSA). These provisions which raise the age of protection to include ages 16 and 17 have been proclaimed as of January 1, 2018.

This important change means, that in addition to regular child welfare, 16- and 17- yours old wards will receive more protection services from Children Aid Societies, including youth justice, child and youth mental health and residential services amoungst other benefits.

Prior to this, youth in this age group had few options if they felt unsafe in their family environment. We are hopeful that this change will provide significant improvements.
