Creative Careers Exist in Our Own Community

Mar 13, 2017

This past Thursday marked a successful Career Crawl hosted by the Youth Studio. Local teens were invited to meet local professionals; Fashion Designer, Tattoo Artist, Multi-Discipline based Artist, Culinary Chef and a Graphic Designer, as they toured studios and attended presentations.

Erin Truswell, Manager at The Children’s Aid Society, who oversees the Youth Studio, remarked, “the Career Crawl allowed local teens to hear first hand the creative opportunities that exist within our community, for employment now as a youth and for future career planning. This event not only demonstrated that Art is a practical and viable career option for our young people, but also how it’s thriving in our very own community.”

Presenters discussed their paths from education to how they started their own business and the types of projects they work on. It is valuable for youth to know that attending post-secondary can open doors to a variety of career paths in the Arts that are right here in our community. The Career Crawl even generated a 2-week internship for one of our participants with 9 Lives Design, a local graphic design business. Participants were welcomed to contact anyone of our presenters for more information and support.

“We are extremely pleased with the interest and significant turnout to our Career Crawl. We’d like to thank the North Bay arts community for welcoming our youth in and offering valuable insights,” says Truswell.

The Youth Studio offers a FREE drop-in space for any teenager in the Nipissing district looking to explore and engage with a variety of Arts mediums. Youth can take advantage of the latest in high tech Arts media such as graphic design, digital programming, and video editing along with all the Traditional Arts such as painting, sculpture, printmaking, mixed media and more.
