Media Release: Arbitration Has Lead To A Fair And Sound Ruling

Sep 7, 2017

NORTH BAY, ON – The Children’s Aid Society of the District of Nipissing and Parry Sound (CASNPS) expresses relief in having a final resolution for the labour dispute.

“Although we are pleased that this process has come to an end, it is unfortunate that we were unable to achieve a lengthier term as we had proposed in this Collective Agreement or to reach consensus on items that would have benefited the collective, such as workload language” said acting chair John Stopper.

The new collective agreement will consist of the items agreed upon prior to arbitration, the un-amended terms of the expired collective agreement and the award from the Arbitrator. The award consists of the following:

• Wage increase of 1.5% to accommodate cost of living
• 2–year term expiring March 31, 2018

All other union and employer proposals will be dismissed.

“The arbitrator confirmed in his ruling, the employer’s justifiable concerns about sick leave costs and alternative measures are being explored and implemented by management to best address this issue. I am pleased to hear that employees are satisfied with the outcome of Arbitration,” stated Stopper.

“I cannot express how it is very regrettable that we will have little time to heal as an organization before we are back at the negotiation table,” Executive Director, Nipissing and Parry Sound CAS Gisèle Hébert said. “Our focus as always remains quality service for the children, youth and families we serve.”
